When mathematicians write an equation such as 7 plus x equals 12, they are describing a balance: whatever sits on the left must weigh exactly the same as whatever sits on the right. The left pan holds a target weight, and you must build an equal weight on the right using the number tiles available. How to Play

  1. Choose 1 Player (balance as many scales as you can) or 2 Players (whoever balances more scales wins).
  2. The left pan shows a target weight. The right pan starts empty.
  3. Tap number tiles to add their weight to the right pan. The scale tilts to show which side is heavier.
  4. Tap a tile already on the right pan to remove it if you change your mind.
  5. When the right pan exactly equals the target, the scale balances and you score a point. A new scale appears.

A Worked Example

Suppose the left pan weighs 10 and your tiles are 3, 4, 6 and 8. Tapping 6 puts the right pan at 6, still too light, so the scale tips left. Adding the 4 brings the right pan to 10, which matches exactly – the scale levels off and you win the round. Notice there was another route: 3 plus the missing 7 would not work with these tiles, so part of the challenge is choosing the combination that actually fits.

Strategy Tips

Start with the largest tile that does not exceed the target, then fill the remaining gap with smaller tiles – this is the same greedy thinking used in making change with coins. Keep an eye on how far you still are from the target after each tile, and do not be afraid to remove a tile and try a different combination. With practice you will start seeing the needed sums instantly.
