Equation Relay – A Timed Algebra Game for 1–4 Players

Equation Relay: Pass the Algebra Baton

Equation Relay makes solving simple equations feel like a team sport. An equation such as 3x + 4 = 19 appears, and you type the value of x. Play alone to build speed, or run a relay with up to four players who hand the device along after each correct solve. A generous two-minute clock keeps the pressure light but real.

Game Modes & Timer

Choose 1 to 4 Players. In multiplayer the baton passes to the next player after every correct answer, relay style, so each person solves their share of equations. Two full minutes per round give players enough time to work through the steps carefully. The timer turns red in the last ten seconds, then announces the winner.

How to Play

Select the number of players and press Start. An equation appears; work out x, type it in the box, and press Check or hit Enter. A correct answer scores a point and, in multiplayer, passes the turn to the next player. Keep solving until the two-minute timer runs out.

A Worked Example

Suppose the equation is 5x − 3 = 22. Add 3 to both sides to get 5x = 25, then divide both sides by 5 to find x = 5. Type 5 and press Check. Undoing the subtraction before the division keeps the working clean and quick.

Strategy Tips

Always undo addition or subtraction first, then deal with the number multiplying x. If the timer is short, do the steps mentally: “5x minus 3 is 22, so 5x is 25, so x is 5.” Checking by substituting your answer back takes only a second and catches slips.

Why It Helps Learners

Equation Relay drills the single most important algebra skill — isolating a variable by keeping an equation balanced. Doing this quickly and accurately under a gentle time limit builds the fluency students need for simultaneous equations, formulas, and word problems, and the relay format keeps a whole group engaged.
