Prime Sweeper is an original reaction-and-recognition game built around one of the most fundamental ideas in mathematics: the prime number. A grid fills with numbers, and your job is to tap only the primes. Tap a composite number by mistake and your turn ends instantly. It rewards both speed and a genuine understanding of what makes a number prime.
The Mathematical Idea
A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 that has exactly two divisors: 1 and itself. The first few primes are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 and 13. Every other whole number above 1 is composite, meaning it can be formed by multiplying smaller numbers together. Primes are often called the building blocks of arithmetic because every integer can be written as a unique product of primes – a result known as the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic. Prime Sweeper trains your brain to recognise these building blocks instantly.
How to Play
- Choose 1 Player (score as many primes as you can) or 2 Players (take turns; highest score wins).
- A grid of numbers from 2 to 50 appears in random positions.
- Tap every prime you can find. Each correct prime adds a point and turns green.
- Tap a composite number and your turn ends immediately – so be sure before you tap!
- When you have found all the primes on the board, you clear it and earn a bonus.
A Worked Example
Imagine you see the numbers 9, 11 and 21. The number 11 is prime, so tapping it is safe and scores a point. The number 9 is 3 multiplied by 3, and 21 is 3 multiplied by 7 – both composite, so both would end your turn. A quick test that helps: if a number is even (other than 2) or its digits add up to a multiple of 3, it is almost certainly composite.
Strategy Tips
Grab the obvious primes first – the small ones like 2, 3, 5 and 7 are easy points. For larger numbers, run through quick divisibility checks: is it even? Does it end in 0 or 5? Do its digits sum to a multiple of 3? If it passes all those, it is very likely prime. Slow down on the tricky middle numbers like 27, 33, 39 and 49, which catch many players out (49 is 7 times 7).
