Percentage Power – A Class 7 Percentage Game

Percentage Power: Find the Percent, Fast

Percentage Power sharpens one of the most practical skills in all of mathematics: finding a percentage of a quantity. A question such as “25% of 80” appears, and the student types the answer. Percentages run through everyday life — discounts, taxes, tips, exam marks — so fluency here pays off far beyond the classroom.

The Mathematical Idea

A percentage is a fraction out of 100. “Per cent” literally means “per hundred”, so 25% means 25/100, or one quarter. To find 25% of 80 you can multiply 80 by 25/100, or use the easier route: 10% of 80 is 8, so 25% is two-and-a-half tens, giving 20. The game rewards these mental shortcuts.

How to Play

When the game loads, a percentage question appears. Work out the value, type it in the box, and press Check or Enter. Correct answers turn green and add a point; incorrect answers turn red so you can recalculate and try again.

A Worked Example

Suppose the question is “15% of 60”. Find 10% first — that is 6. Then 5% is half of that, which is 3. Add them: 6 + 3 = 9. So 15% of 60 is 9. Building percentages out of 10% and 5% chunks is the quickest mental method.

Strategy Tips

Anchor on 10% (just divide by ten) and build other percentages from it: 5% is half of 10%, 20% is double, 1% is a tenth. For “find the percent” problems, remember that percentages are reversible: x% of y always equals y% of x, so 4% of 50 is the same as 50% of 4.

Why It Helps Learners

Percentage Power builds quick, reliable percentage calculation — a skill needed constantly for shopping discounts, interest, statistics, and exam scores. Mastery now supports later work on profit and loss, simple and compound interest, and data interpretation across many subjects.
