Fraction Fill – A Class 5 Fractions Game

Fraction Fill: See the Part, Name the Fraction

Fraction Fill makes fractions visual and concrete for Class 5. A bar is divided into equal parts with some parts shaded. The student looks at the shaded portion and chooses the fraction that matches. By connecting a picture to its fraction symbol, the game builds the intuition that a fraction is simply a number of equal parts out of a whole.

The Mathematical Idea

A fraction has two jobs: the denominator tells how many equal parts the whole is split into, and the numerator tells how many of those parts we have. Many students learn the symbols without a mental picture. Fraction Fill keeps the picture front and centre, so 3/4 always means “three of four equal parts” rather than a meaningless pair of numbers.

How to Play

When the game loads, a divided bar appears with some sections shaded. Count the shaded parts and the total parts, then tap the button showing the matching fraction. Correct answers turn green and add a point; incorrect answers turn red so you can look again and retry.

A Worked Example

Suppose the bar is split into 5 equal parts and 2 are shaded. The whole has 5 parts (denominator) and 2 are shaded (numerator), so the fraction is 2/5. Tap the 2/5 button. Counting the total parts first, then the shaded parts, gives the fraction every time.

Strategy Tips

Always count the total number of equal parts before counting the shaded ones — that fixes the denominator. Remember that if every part is shaded the fraction equals one whole, and that the more parts a whole is cut into, the smaller each part becomes.

Why It Helps Learners

Fraction Fill builds the visual understanding of fractions that underpins comparing, adding, and simplifying them in later classes. A strong mental picture of “parts of a whole” supports work with decimals, percentages, ratios, and probability — and everyday tasks like reading recipes or splitting things fairly.
